A small amateur video clip (2006).

First example for the course "Semiotic and cultural description of amateur audiovisual productions"

Explanations

This is a small excerpt from an amateur video of some 42 seconds - a very simple audiovisual document like millions of similar amateur videos that can be found on sites such as You Tube, Daily Motion, on video blogs or in the personal archives of a person, family, club, etc..

Only the referential content (in this case: a square surrounded by palaces) changes in such amateur clips.

The modes of "imaging" elements belonging to the pro-filmic situation, the editing/montage of visualised elements, the paratextual development of amateur clips (generic headings, subtitles, ...) and also the adding of musical elements are often used in a quite similar manner in this kind of audiovisual amateur "mass" production.

The systematic and comparative analysis of selected corpus of audiovisual amateur productions can be considered as an important contribution to a better understanding of the modern culture of visual representation and assessment of the "self", the "other", the "surrounding world", etc.
